A true Ballard hero
We here at inballard.com are truly saddened at the passing of Edith Macefield, a true Ballard hero. She refused to sell her home and bow to the developers who are erasing Ballard's history. Edith, you were a true inspiration and we know that your spirit will live on for all of us who call Ballard home. It is our hope that your tiny house will remain intact, in spite of the 30 foot walls that surround it, and that it will become a symbol as to what real people can do. You can read about Edith in the Seattle Times. Thank you to Chuck Pefley for the photo of Edith's house.
Save Edith's house!
If you would like to see Edith's house remain, we urge you to contact Ledcor, the developers of the site surrounding Edith's home, and voice your support for keeping the house as it is in her memory.
About inballard.com
Inballard.com was created in 1998 as a way to showcase the best places to drink, eat, shop, live and go in, what was then a very sleepy, quiet Ballard community. Since then Ballard has certainly changed and become a booming, vibrant neighborhood. Places on the site have been spotted by the local Ballard staff and/or submitted by viewers and reviewed by our selection committee. If considered a place that the committee would recommend to their friends and family, it is placed onto the site in the appropriate category. New places are added as often as possible but, since we are volunteer based, the speed of updates can vary.
The site is designed, developed & maintained through a generous donation by Design Hovie Studios and a wonderful group of volunteers.
About Ballard
Ballard is a vibrant neighborhood located in the northwest part of the city of Seattle. Full of great locally owned boutique shops, pubs, restaurants, and waterfront parks, Ballard is a must see for tourists, as well as people from all over the Seattle area. For more on Ballard happenings, check out the Ballard's blog or visit "At large in Ballard with Peggy Sturdivant."
Ballard was first settled in 1853. In 1889 it was incorporated in Washington State and in 1907, Ballard was annexed to Seattle. Proud of its Scandinavian heritage, Ballard has many reminders of its past including the annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade on May 17, the Nordic Heritage Museum, and the Bergen Place mural that was dedicated by the King & Queen of Norway in 1996.
